Kali Sarakosti!
Today is our first day of Sarakosti.
It's the beginning of our fast.
We won't eat meat or products that come from meat like milk, eggs, cheese e.t.c., till Easter on April 18th.
The next day will eat lamp on the spit.
But till then, no meat.
The first day of the fast we call it "Kathara Deftera" (means Clean Monday).
We clean our body from foods that contain blood and our mind and soul from bad thoughts and habits.
At least we try.
We had lunch with my sister, Marina, and her family.
The menu of the day was:
Lagana (it's bread kneaded in a special way),
octapus with oil, origan and vinegar,
shrimps
shrimps with green pepper, carrots, onions and parsley,
potato salad with shrimps, tomatoes, cucumber and olives,
taramosalata (salad with tarama, the egg of the fish),
white beans with onion and parsley,
fried potatoes for the kids
and for dessert we had halva (sugar, tahini and dark chocolate).
After our lunch we went for kite flying.
This year we flied two kites.
One for the girls and another one for the older kids (me and my hubby).
We had a very special and funny day!
Next week i'll show you how we spent the carnival before the beginning of the fast.
to see other beautiful places of our world.

Kite flying with girls is so much fun! (Until the little one lets go and the thing goes away so quickly it cannot be found.) What a fun and lovely day!
What a beautiful adventure - flying kites! The pictures are so lovely! And your girls look so happy!
I admire you that you still adhere to old customs like fasting before Easter.
Your meal looks so delicious!
Have a nice week ahead!
After all this action of fasting and flying kites, a Demel Schokotörtchen or Obstschüsserl would be a good icing on the cake :)))
what a great day you had - our food was similar to yours, but we stayed indoors because i had a bad cold
Everything looks delicious. I don't think you're suffering with no meat and dairy products. ;-)
Uh - you're making me hungry! :)
Cheers, Klaus
What great fun! Love the kites! And the food looks heavenly! Sounds and looks like such a great day! Thank you for sharing. I, too, think that it is lovely that you still follow all the old customs.
The food looks so delicious and I also love the shots of the kite flying. Such fun.
It was very windy here in Dubai today and I was just telling hubby how I wished we were outdoors flying kites instead of sitting in the office. Looks like your girls had a great time!
PS: The food looks so yummy :)
Kite flying is big here because of the wind. Such happy images.
How wondeful to fly kites! And the food looks delicious!Very interesting to see how you celebrate the 40 days before Easter.Thank you for sharing! I have this week dedicated to Greece, because I was in your country on a special journey called in the footsteps of Saint Paul.
Oh very interesting tradition/culture. Flied kite when I was a kid; haven't since then, maybe I should again.

I loved this post, and loved seeing such beautiful food! We're fasting too at our house; I'm starving now but every year I appreciate the spiritual side of these traditions more.
Have fun with the family and happy Spring!

The food looks delicious. Very few people follow a strict Lenten fast here anymore. Your Easter in the Orthodox church is later than ours.
Thanks for visiting and commenting on my post!
My first husband was Turkish so I am familiar with this. Plus the pictures of your wonderful cooking, always remind me of those amazing meals with his family.
Lots of good food and activities, sounds like a fun time was had by all.
That is a wonderful My World post, and quite a feast at Marina's house. The kite flying looked like a lot of fun. Great photos, all of them!
Antigoni: I love Greek food and yours is no excetion. The kite flying looked like a lot of fun.
Dear Antigoni! Thank you for your comment! Yes I enjoyed the trip! And the people I met were very kind and interesting, like you!
Besides the sweet stuff, all the other things make my mouth water !!
You clearly will not die of hunger!
But then, the Greek kitchen is famous and well worth trying.
PS Thank you for the pleasant comment.
It sounds as if you had a wonderful day. It's been too long since I've flown a kite. The dishes for your meal look delicious.
Hi from Belgrade. I love all the food you have posted, and I love all Greek food! My son spent last year in Athens getting his MBA, and so has many fond memories of Greece. I was in Corfu last summer.
Bibi is my dog's name... :<)
Hi again! Thank you for offering me an award. I'd rather just use Bibi rather than my actual name, if that is okay. If not, thank you for thinking of me!
I'm ok for the fast as soon as I can eat a little bit of all these dishes even after Easter.
All seems yummy.
Hope you'll show us Easter celebrations in your world, Antigoni.
